Our Services

We constantly strive to exceed the expectations of our patients by providing competent, innovative, and accessible eye care services in a professional and patient-friendly manner.

At STC Optometry, our thorough examinations go beyond the focus of 20/20 vision. Our complete eye exams will not only help you see clearly they also ensure every aspect of your eye health is evaluated. Our doctors use the latest technology, including retinal imaging, to evaluate the internal structures of your eyes. This evaluation is very important as many ocular conditions can manifest without any symptoms.

Our Services Include

Comprehensive Eye Exams

A comprehensive eye exam is a thorough examination, not a quick conclusion for the purpose of a prescription. We perform a variety of tests to evaluate the overall health of your eyes. Regular comprehensive eye exams are not only for people with vision problems – they are beneficial to all. In some cases, our optometrists can detect conditions such as diabetes or hypertension during a comprehensive eye exam, prior to the patient experiencing any symptoms.

Upon your arrival at STC Optometry, our welcoming and knowledgeable staff will guide you through several preliminary tests. These tests provide your doctors with a baseline from which to begin your examination. Following your preliminary tests, you will meet one of our friendly eye doctors and have the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have about your eyes. Your doctor will determine your acuity and prescription, and then evaluate the external and internal structures of your eye.

By the end of your exam, you will know the full picture of your eye and vision health. Our optometrists will have screened your eyes for conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes, and macular degeneration. Our friendly doctors will explain your results and answer any questions you might have about your treatment plan and overall eye health.

Pediatric Eye Examinations

STC Optometry welcomes patients as young as 3 years old. Annual eye exams for children are crucial as many conditions can lead to improper development of the eye. As such, all children age 19 and under are covered by OHIP for an annual eye examination. Not only is this vital for maintaining healthy vision, it can be key in avoiding sight-related difficulties at school. Our staff at STC Optometry will ensure that your child has a positive first experience. During your child’s examination, our Doctors will not only determine if there is a need for glasses, they will also rule out any conditions commonly seen in children such as amblyopia (also known as “lazy eye”) and strabismus (also known as "eye turn").

Senior Examinations

Normal eye-related aging changes can be visually disturbing for seniors. As such, annual eye examinations are extremely important and are covered by OHIP for all patients 65 and over. Conditions such as cataracts, dry eyes, and age-related macular degeneration are commonly seen in seniors, and at times can develop with no symptoms. Your Optometrists at STC Optometry will provide careful and thorough evaluations, and refer you to the appropriate specialist if it is time to consider surgical options.

Contact Lenses

Our office is equipped with the newest and latest brands in contact lenses. Our Doctors personally conduct each contact lens fitting and examination and have the ability to correct most prescriptions with contact lenses. Our friendly office staff provides training sessions for new wearers to ensure the lenses are worn correctly. We offer competitive pricing allowing our patients to purchase lenses at costs lower than those found on the internet.

At STC Optometry, our Doctors are familiar with the newest and latest contact lenses on the market. Our contact lens fittings begin with a comprehensive eye examination. Your Doctor determines an accurate prescription and will confirm that you are a good candidate for contact lenses. He or she will then determine what your visual needs are; do you require correction for astigmatism, distance vision, and/or near vision? Do you work in a dusty environment? Do you have dry eyes? Based on this discussion, our doctors will select the best lens for you and your eye shape.

In most cases, we will have your trial contact lenses in the office for you to try. You will wear these lenses for a week and return to the office for a no-charge follow-up. If you are uncomfortable with the lens, or the doctor finds the lens is a poor fit, an alternative lens is recommended. Once your doctor is content with the fit and vision obtained with the lens, the prescription is finalized.

Insertion and Removal Training

Contact lens insertion and removal training is provided to all patients who are new to wearing contacts or those who have not worn contacts in an extended period of time. Our staff at STC Optometry will provide clear instructions so that you leave our office feeling confident and successful when inserting, removing, or caring for your contact lenses.

Contact Lens Modalities Offered at STC Optometry

  • Daily lenses, bi-weekly lenses, monthly lenses, or conventional lenses.
  • Sphere, astigmatism, mono-vision, multi-focal, and color contact lenses.
  • Gas Permeable Lenses (RGP) including sphere, astigmatism, bi-focal, and multi-focal options.

STC Optometry is fully equipped with technologically-advanced equipment allowing our Doctors to provide you with the best care possible. We are here to help you see the more important things in life and we do so by ensuring that our office has the equipment, knowledge, and qualifications that will provide you with optimal vision care.

Our Doctors have obtained extensive training in order to diagnose, treat, and manage eye conditions such as cataracts, diabetes, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. We work closely with a team of Ophthalmologists to ensure that you can seek treatment as quickly as possible. The following list includes common conditions managed by our office on a routine basis:

Although cataracts can occur in infants and young children, most cataracts are commonly seen in adults or seniors over the age of 55 as a result of a normal aging change. A cataract causes clouding of the lens and can interfere with your vision in numerous ways. Your Optometrists at STC Optometry will ensure that cataracts are detected and taken care of when surgery is warranted.

Diabetic Retinal Evaluations

Diabetic Retinopathy is a condition that occurs in individuals with uncontrolled or longstanding diabetes. In the early stages of diabetes, patients may be asymptomatic to changes that are occurring in the retina. Over time, these complications may become sight-threatening. Family physicians recommend diabetics have an eye examination, and more specifically, a dilated fundus examination on an annual basis. All patients diagnosed with diabetes are covered by OHIP to receive comprehensive eye exams on an annual basis.

Glaucoma Evaluation and Treatment

Glaucoma is known as a silent disease and many patients are unaware of the condition existing in their eyes. Unfortunately, glaucoma can cause permanent vision loss. Our Optometrists screen every patient during their comprehensive eye examination by testing their peripheral vision, measuring their eye pressure, and evaluating the optic nerve. We also manage our patients on a routine basis to prevent any progression of the disease.

There are multiple forms of glaucoma; your Optometrists at STC Optometry will thoroughly diagnose and provide treatment if it is required.

Macular Degeneration Management

Macular degeneration affects the macula, the part of the retina that is vital in focusing and having sharp vision. Risk factors for macular degeneration include age, high blood pressure, obesity, genes (hereditary) and even smoking. Having a lighter eye colour also entails a higher risk. Our Optometrists will screen every adult for this condition and educate each patient on preventative measures one must take to protect their eyes from macular degeneration.

Eye Infections & Emergencies

Your Optometrist can help save you hours while you visit you nearest walk-in clinic or emergency room. We treat all red eyes, pink eyes, foreign bodies, and other ocular emergencies, and are known as the primary eye care providers of North America.

Emergency eye care services are offered at STC Optometry for all eye infections and eye injuries. If you are experiencing a medical emergency during office hours, please call our office immediately.

Our Optometrists treat the following eye emergencies:

  • Eye Infections: all red eyes, “pink eyes,” painful eyes, or itching
  • Eye Irritations: ocular allergies, dry eyes, irritated eyes, and contact lens complications
  • Trauma: foreign body removal, scratched eyes, or any eye trauma
  • Other Visual Symptoms: such as flashes, floaters, or sudden loss of vision

Dry Eye Treatment

An imbalanced tear film may be due to inadequate tear production or poor quality of tears; this leads to dry eye. Symptoms of dry eye include a gritty feeling, burning and even excessive tearing. The majority of patients over the age of 65 experience some form of dryness.

Dry eye is a common eye condition that can result from improper production of tears or an imbalance of your tear film. This can be visually disturbing and leave your eyes feeling tired, gritty, scratchy, burning, or even result in excessive tearing. There are a number of factors that cause dry eye. Age, gender, environmental conditions, certain medical conditions and medications can all cause dry eye symptoms.

Your Optometrists at STC Optometry will carefully analyze your tear film, identify the severity of the dry eye, rule out specific causes of dry eye, and prescribe the appropriate measures to improve your symptoms.

Pre/Post-Op Surgical Care

Lasik, PRK, and Cataract co-management is implemented at our office. We work alongside the GTA’s best ophthalmologists and refractive surgeons to help manage your eye care needs.

Ophthalmology Referrals

Our office works collaboratively with Ophthalmologists in the GTA to provide you with a cohesive and thorough treatment plan. If a referral is deemed necessary, the staff at STC Optometry will find you the next available appointment and provide your Ophthalmologist or Family Physician with a detailed report of your findings.

Cataract Surgery Referral

Once your Optometrist determines your cataract is visually disturbing and ready to be removed, STC Optometry will schedule a cataract evaluation and removal with a surgeon for you. We will guide you through each step and will monitor you closely post-surgery to insure your eyes are fully healed.

Laser Vision Correction

Ask your Doctors at STC Optometry if you are a candidate for laser surgery. We are open to answering all of your questions and providing a complementary Lasik consultation for you after the completion of your comprehensive eye exam. A number of factors determine if you are a prospective candidate including your age, prescription, and ocular health. Once you are deemed a fit candidate, your Optometrists at STC Optometry will work closely with the lasik surgeon to ensure a successful outcome. Continuous counselling and guidance will be provided and your Optometrist will see you routinely for pre- and post-operative follow-ups.

Advanced Technology

STC Optometry is fully equipped with up-to-date and technologically-advanced equipment allowing our Doctors to provide you with the best care possible. Read further to learn how we are using cutting-edge technology to screen and manage the internal eye structures.

STC Optometry offers the optomap® as an important part of our eye exam. The optomap produces an image that is unique and provides our Doctors a high-resolution 200° image in order to ascertain the health of your retina. This is much wider than a traditional 45° image. Many eye problems can develop without you knowing, in fact, you may not even notice any change in your sight – fortunately, diseases or damage such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, and other health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be seen with a thorough exam of the retina. The inclusion of optomap as part of a comprehensive eye exam provides:

  • A scan to show a healthy eye or detect disease.
  • A view of the retina, giving your doctor a more comprehensive view than they can get by other means.
  • The opportunity for you to view and discuss the optomap image of your eye with your doctor at the time of your exam.
  • A permanent record for your file, which allows our Doctors to view your images each year to look for changes.

Visual Field Test

The optomap is fast, easy, and comfortable for anyone. The entire image process consists of you looking into the device one eye at a time. The optomap images are shown immediately on a computer screen so we can review it with you.

A visual field test enables your doctor to evaluate your peripheral vision or “side vision.” It is a simple and painless test that is commonly used to diagnose and monitor the progression of diseases such as glaucoma. Many eye and brain disorders can cause peripheral vision loss without any symptoms reported by the patient. Stroke, brain tumors, and neurological defects in the visual pathway can all be detected with this instrument.

Each eye is tested separately and the patient is requested to press a button every time he or she sees a light appear. This light will change in intensity throughout the course of the examination. The test time can range from 5- 15 minutes per eye.
